Physical and chemical properties
 
White to light gray fluid paste, thermoplastic. It is unstable to heat, discolors at high temperature (240°C) and loses its original physical and chemical properties. Viscosity should be specified for commercial grade products. The relative density is 1.07~1.18, the refractive index is 1.47, and the softening point is 100~130℃. It can form a tough film and can still maintain flexibility at low temperature. Can be mixed with resin, wax, oil, etc. Stable to alkalis and dilute acids. The softening point and hygroscopicity decreased with the increase of ethoxy content. The ethoxy content of standard Chemicalbook quasi-commodities is 47% to 48%. Almost insoluble in water, glycerol and propylene glycol, but soluble in some organic solvents to varying degrees (depending on the ethoxy content). Ethyl cellulose with an ethoxy content of less than 46% to 48% is easily soluble in a mixture of tetrahydrofuran, methyl acetate, chloroform and aromatic hydrocarbon-ethanol. Those with an ethoxy content greater than 46% to 48% are easily soluble in ethanol, methanol, toluene, chloroform and ethyl acetate. The litmus test of the 5% suspension was neutral.

Applications
 

Ethyl cellulose is used in large quantities in coatings. It can also be used as a basic material for solid lubricants for metal workpiece stamping. In microcircuit printing, ethyl cellulose is used as a vehicle. In the radio industry, it is used as a high-grade insulating material, and as a special film in protective coatings, such as the cladding of rocket propellants. It can be used as hot-melt adhesives and coatings for cables, paper, textiles, etc., as well as insulation for extrusion lines and toughness enhancers for plastics. It can also be used as pigment grinding base, for printing ink, for molding plastic powder, for explosive fuze, and for formulating vitamins with Chemicalbook. Used as a peelable coating to protect metal parts from corrosion and damage prior to use, and as a peelable coating to protect fragile glassware. In adhesives, textiles and fibers, medicine and food, and other industries, there are many uses. Industrial grade ethyl cellulose is used in coatings (gel type coatings, hot melt coatings), inks (screen printing inks, gravure inks), adhesives, pigment pastes, etc. Advanced products are used in medicine, cosmetics and food, such as pharmaceutical tablet packaging materials, binders for long-acting preparations, etc.
