Phosphorous acid is an inorganic compound with a chemical formula of H3PO3 and a molecular weight of 82.00.
Soluble in water and alcohol. It is slowly oxidized into phosphoric acid in the air, and decomposed into phosphoric acid and phosphine (highly toxic and explosive) when heated to 180 °C. Phosphorous acid is a dibasic acid, and its acidity is slightly stronger than that of phosphoric acid. It has strong reducibility and can easily reduce silver ions (Ag+) to metallic silver (Ag), and can reduce sulfuric acid to sulfur dioxide. It has strong hygroscopicity and deliquescence, and is corrosive. Phosphorous acid is mainly used as reducing agent, nylon whitening agent, and also as phosphite raw material, pesticide intermediate and raw material of organophosphorus water treatment agent.
