Physicochemical Properties

C2H3O2Cl is an organochlorine compound with the chemical name chloroacetic acid. Also known as monochloroacetic acid (MCA) or 2-chloroacetic acid. It is chloroacetic acid with a 2-chloro substituent. It acts as a herbicide and an alkylating agent. It is derived from acetic acid.
Chloroacetic acid was first prepared in 1843 by the French chemist Felix LeBlanc. It is prepared by chlorinating acetic acid (CH3COOH) in sunlight. In 1857, it was prepared by the German chemist Reinhold Hoffmann by refluxing glacial acetic acid in the presence of sunlight and chlorine gas. A French chemist named Charles-Adolphe Wurtz also prepared chloroacetic acid in the same year (1857) by reacting chloroacetyl chloride with water.
