Basic Information

Industrially, formic acid is primarily produced through the oxidation of methanol or through carbonylation synthesis. It serves as an important raw material in the manufacture of dyes, fragrances, plasticizers, and rubber. In the leather industry, formic acid is utilized as a tanning agent, aiding in color fixation and enhancing durability during leather production. Additionally, it functions as a preservative and acidulant in agriculture, preventing feed from molding in animal husbandry and acting as a natural herbicide.
