Physical and chemical properties

 

Exterior
MC is white or off-white fibrous or granular powder, odorless.
traits
Almost insoluble in absolute ethanol, ether and acetone. It disperses and swells rapidly in hot water at 80-90°C, and dissolves rapidly after cooling down. The aqueous solution is quite stable at room temperature, and can gel at high temperature, and the gel can transform with the solution with the temperature. It has excellent wetting, dispersing, adhesive, thickening, emulsifying, water-retaining and film-forming properties, as well as impermeability to grease. The formed film has excellent toughness, flexibility and transparency. Because it is non-ionic, it can be compatible with other emulsifiers, but it is easy to salt out, and the solution is stable in the pH range of 2-12.
Apparent density: 0.30-0.70g/cm3, the density is about 1.3g/cm3.
The theoretical substitution degree DS of methyl cellulose in industry is 1.5~2.0, and the bulk density is 0.35~0.55g/cm

Applications

 

Used as a thickener for water-soluble adhesives, such as neoprene latex.
It can also be used as dispersant, emulsifier and stabilizer for suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride and styrene. MC with DS=2.4~2.7 is soluble in polar organic solvent, which can prevent the volatilization of the solvent (dichloromethane-ethanol mixture).

 

Identify
1. Take an appropriate amount of 1% aqueous solution of this product, put it in a test tube, slowly add 2 mL of 0.035% anthrone sulfuric acid solution along the tube wall, and place it, and a blue-green ring appears at the interface between the two liquids.
2. Take 10mL of the 1% aqueous solution of this product, heat it, the solution will produce fog-like or flake-like precipitation, and after cooling, the precipitation will dissolve.
3. Take an appropriate amount of 1% aqueous solution of this product, pour it on a glass plate, and form a tough film after the water evaporates.

 

Stability and Storage Conditions


Methylcellulose powder is stable, although it is slightly dilutable, bulk products should be stored in airtight containers in a cool, dry place.
Methylcellulose solutions are stable to bases and dilute acids at pH 3-11 at room temperature. At pH below 3, the glucose-glucose bond is hydrolyzed due to acid catalysis and leads to a decrease in solution viscosity. On heating, the viscosity of the solution decreased until a gel formed at about 50 degrees.
Methylcellulose is easily destroyed by microorganisms and spoiled, so antibacterial preservatives should be used. The solution can also be autoclaved, although this process reduces the viscosity of the solution. After autoclaving, the change in solution viscosity is related to solution pH. Solutions with a pH lower than 4 showed a viscosity reduction of more than 20% after autoclaving.
