Hydroxyethyl methyl cellulose (MHPC) is an odorless, tasteless, non-toxic white powder that can be dissolved in cold water to form a transparent viscous solution. It has the properties of thickening, binding, dispersing, emulsifying, film-forming, suspending, adsorbing, gelling, surface-active, retaining moisture and protecting colloids. Because the aqueous solution has surface active function, it can be used as colloid protective agent, emulsifier and dispersant. Hydroxyethyl methylcellulose aqueous solution has good hydrophilicity and is an efficient water-retaining agent. Hydroxyethyl methyl cellulose has good anti-mildew ability because it contains hydroxyethyl group, and has good viscosity stability and anti-mildew degeneration during long-term storage.

Applications

1 Pharmaceuticals are used as hydrophilic gel matrix materials, porogens and coating agents for the preparation of sustained-release preparations. It can also be used as a thickening, suspending, dispersing, binding, emulsifying, film-forming and water-retaining agent for formulations.
2. Food processing can also be used as, bonding, emulsifying, film-forming, thickening, suspending, dispersing, water-retaining agent, etc.
3. In the daily chemical industry, it is used as an additive for toothpaste, cosmetics, detergents, etc.
4. It can be used as cement, gypsum, lime gelling agent and water-retaining agent. It is an excellent admixture for powder building materials.
5. Hydroxyethyl methylcellulose is widely used as an excipient for pharmaceutical preparations, including oral tablets, suspensions and topical preparations.
It has similar properties to methyl cellulose, but due to the presence of hydroxyethyl groups, hydroxyethyl methyl cellulose is more water-soluble in water, the solution is more compatible with salts, and has a higher coagulation temperature.
