Easily hygroscopic. Soluble in tert-butanol, its solution is relatively stable, and it is often used in the dehalogenation of halogenated hydrocarbons. Decomposes on exposure to air. In case of water, it is decomposed into potassium oxide and tert-butanol. It can be obtained by evaporating tert-butanol under reduced pressure after the reaction between tert-butanol and metal potassium. It is widely used in condensation, rearrangement and ring-opening reactions in organic synthesis, generally using tert-butanol solution. Potassium tert-butoxide is an organic alkaline corrosive product, which is highly hygroscopic. It should be sealed and stored.
