Strong alkaline condensing agent Potassium tert-butoxide is a strong alkaline condensing agent, its alkalinity is stronger than that of sodium methoxide and sodium ethoxide. This product is white or off-white solid powder at room temperature, with the chemical formula (CH3)3C—O—K , molecular weight 112.21, density 0.929, melting point 256-258 ℃, boiling point 275 ℃. Easily hygroscopic. Soluble in tert-butanol, its solution is relatively stable, and it is often used in the dehalogenation of halogenated hydrocarbons. Decomposes on exposure to air. In case of water, it is decomposed into potassium oxide and tert-butanol. It can be obtained by evaporating tert-butanol under reduced pressure after the reaction between tert-butanol and metal potassium. It is widely used in condensation, rearrangement and ring-opening reactions in organic synthesis, generally using tert-butanol solution. Potassium tert-butoxide is an organic alkaline corrosive product, which is highly hygroscopic. It should be sealed and stored. During storage and transportation, pay attention to fire prevention, sun protection and should be stored in a cool, ventilated and dry place. 

Applications

Used in the 6-elimination reaction of halogenated hydrocarbons to form alkenes by dehydrohalogenation
It is a moderately strong base commonly used in organic synthesis.
For printing and dyeing, catalysts, etc.
Potassium tert-butoxide is mixed with alkyl lithium to make Schlosser base.
