Physical and chemical properties

PVDF can be synthesized by a free radical (or controlled radical) polymerization process using a gaseous vinylidene fluoride monomer. Fusion casting or solution processing (such as solution casting, spin coating, or film casting) is followed. At the same time, Langmuir-Blodgett films were also prepared. Solvents commonly used for solution-based processing include dimethylformamide and butanone. In aqueous emulsion polymerization, fluorosurfactants, perfluoroacids in anionic form, are commonly used as processing aids for solubilizing monomers. Compared to other fluoropolymers, polyvinylidene fluoride has a lower melting point (about 177°C), making it easier to melt process.

Applications
