Strong oxidant Benzoyl peroxide is a strong oxidant, which can be used to bleach organic matter, such as flour, vegetable oil, etc., but it has a strong destructive effect on β-carotene, vitamin A, vitamin E and vitamin B1 in flour, The maximum usage amount is 0.25～0.3g/kg flour; it is easily decomposed into free radicals when heated to 70～90℃, and is widely used as an initiator for the polymerization and photochemical reactions of vinyl monomers (vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, etc.). Most of them will cause discoloration and yellowing of the polymer, and at the same time, some pigments can be reduced for Chemicalbook use. Benzoyl peroxide can be rapidly decomposed when heated to about 100°C, and can cause explosion in a sealed container, so it should be treated as a dangerous product. Benzoyl peroxide is sensitive to impact and friction, and has a high risk of explosion. Contact with metallic powders, activated carbon and reducing agents should be avoided, and the safety precautions on the container label must be followed. In order to prevent the danger of fire and explosion, it is usually diluted to about 20% with three or more substances such as calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, magnesium carbonate, alum and starch (diluted benzoyl peroxide).
Applications
Benzoyl peroxide is the most widely used initiator in the adhesive industry. It is used for the solvent polymerization of acrylate, vinyl acetate, and the graft polymerization of chloroprene rubber, natural rubber, SBS and methyl methacrylate. Initiator for curing of unsaturated polyester resins, plexiglass adhesives, etc.
It can be used as a monomer polymerization initiator for polyvinyl chloride, unsaturated polyester, polyacrylate, etc. It can also be used as a crosslinking agent for polyethylene and a rubber vulcanizing agent.
