Properties
White crystalline powder with slight odor. Melting point 103～106℃(decomposition), t1/2=2.4h(85℃), 4.3h(80℃), 8.4h(75℃), decomposition temperature [0.2M benzene] 73℃. Soluble in chloroform and benzene. Slightly soluble in ethanol, vegetable oil, insoluble in water. The dry product is extremely unstable, and it can explode due to friction, impact, heat or reducing agent. Flammable and non-toxic.
Applications
Benzoyl peroxide is the most widely used initiator in the adhesive industry. It is used for the solvent polymerization of acrylate, vinyl acetate, and the graft polymerization of neoprene, natural rubber, SBS and methyl methacrylate. Initiator for curing of unsaturated polyester resins, plexiglass adhesives, etc. It can also be used as vulcanizing agent and cross-linking agent for silicone rubber and fluororubber. Can also be used as bleaching agent and oxidizing agent.
