The method of preparing potassium tert-butoxide in the laboratory is to add metal potassium into the freshly distilled tert-butanol under nitrogen atmosphere, reflux until the potassium is completely dissolved, and then keep warm for 1 h. The excess tert-butanol is distilled off, and the remaining white solid is placed in an oil bath for 180~ Drying Chemicalbook under vacuum at 190℃ for more than 10h can obtain the crystalline powder of potassium tert-butoxide, which needs to be stored under nitrogen. Applications

Used in the 6-elimination reaction of halogenated hydrocarbons to form alkenes by dehydrohalogenation

It is a moderately strong base commonly used in organic synthesis.

For printing and dyeing, catalysts, etc.

Potassium tert-butoxide is mixed with alkyl lithium to make Schlosser base.
