Properties
Benzoic acid is an aromatic acid organic compound and the simplest aromatic acid. Its molecular formula is white needle-like or scaly crystals in appearance. Benzoic acid is widely present in nature in the form of free acid, ester or its derivatives.
Applications
It is mainly used for the preparation of sodium benzoate preservative, and for the synthesis of drugs and dyes; also for the preparation of plasticizers, mordants, fungicides and spices. It can be prepared by direct oxidation of toluene in the presence of manganese dioxide; or prepared by decarboxylation of phthalic anhydride with water vapor
